The first Veteran’s Shed in the United Kingdom opened its doors in North Wales A Veteran’s Shed has been set up in Llanddulas North Wales near Abergele, providing a meeting place and support network for military veterans. Veterans are invited to attend a meeting “O. Group” at the Youth and Community Centre on Beach Road. The intention is to provide a support network and participate in a range of activities. Our constitution is about helping local communities and being able to talk and enjoying the company of like-minded people. We have an activities and community task board were you can put your name down and when there are enough people to task we will go out and assist or participate. You can, if you wish just turn up and play card games, or watch TV, exercise, participate in military/history talks, memorabilia displays, model making, or go out walking around our wonderful country.
Veteran’s Shed was inspired by the Men’s Shed organisation which was set up to support and improve the physical and mental health of older and retired men. Veteran’s Shed recognises that ex-service personnel also suffer in this way too. This also includes all genders and physical abilities as the club is disable friendly. We acknowledge that veterans often report having a lower quality of life due to loneliness, isolation and reduced social opportunities and are looking for likeminded people and activities. Secretary John Johnson a former 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards Serviceman commented “We have had some great support from community members already kindly offering to arrange outings for the veterans such as trips to places of military interest, fishing excursions, even scuba diving and visits to Airsoft (a form of paintballing) over on Anglesey. We aim to provide activities that appeal to all ages of ex-service personnel to give them a range of opportunities.” The group will also organise projects for veterans to get involved in. In due course more-abled veterans will offer to help less-abled veterans through a range of services such as: gardening, decorating, and general odd-jobbing. Monetary donations or items of equipment to facilitate our proposed activities would be gratefully appreciated from the general public. It is hoped that increased interaction and displays of support will promote the well-being of this admirable community. The group are meeting on a Wednesday from 1300 – 1500 during the wintertime with the intension of opening during the evening in the very near future. There is a £1 sub charge to cover the cost of refreshments. All newcomers are most welcome!
